Torches are the player's primary source of light in Minecraft. They are crafted using Coal or Charcoal on top of a Stick. When placed on a solid block, Torches will emit a fairly bright light, illuminating everything up to about four blocks away sufficiently to prevent hostile mob spawning. This is essential for giving a player peace from mobs and a way to see precious ores in caves.

Interactions with Water

When placed underwater, Torches will remain there for a second until the next block update, providing a light, but will then pop off as if broken.
