The Block of Coal is a block introduced in the Horse Update (1.6.1). It is crafted with 9 Coal in a 3 by 3 square. Charcoal does not work. Blocks of Coal can be used to smelt 80 items, making them 80% more efficient as a Bucket of Lava. They are available earlier in the game, too, generally. A block of coal smelts more items than its individual parts.

Trivia

• Although they are crafted with 9 Coal, Blocks of Coal smelt items equal to 10 Coal (80 items). To make the best of this, it is suggested to feed items into a Furnace either manually or using a Hopper. Note that using a Hopper does not grant any experience.
• Blocks of Coal are the only flammable mineral blocks; they can burn if set alight and will catch fire.
