Wool (previously known as Cloth) is a set of 16 blocks with different colors, including three shades of gray added in Classic 0.0.20a, having a single texture that is used on all sides of the block. The cloth was added for the creation of Pixel art, and to make colorful buildings and structures. Another common use is to make rainbows, sometimes in the form of towers or carpeting. They are weak, flammable blocks, and do not offer much resistance against explosions. White, grey and black wools can be obtained naturally from the respective Sheep. White wool can also be created by combining nine pieces of strings together.

A sword will speed up the mining of wool slightly, but it can easily be mined without the use of Tools. Like Soul Sand, wool can be used to absorb some impact made from boats colliding into it at high speeds.

Wool can be combined with sticks to make Paintings.

History

The Classic wool spectrum.

In Creative Classic mode, wool blocks were commonly known as Cloth blocks. It comes with a set of 16 colours although the shade of colours were slightly different from the current ones.

These colored cloth, excluding white, were left unobtainable in the game during Classic's Survival Test and Indev unless they were pre-placed into the map file. They were completely removed from the code in Infdev. Placing these blocks on the map would cause the game client to crash, since the blocks no longer existed.

Cloth were renamed to wool in Beta. Beta 1.2 reintroduced coloured wool once again, using different materials to create dyes. Along with the update, sheep can naturally spawn with light grey, grey or black wool.
